Welcome, Ravens!
On behalf of the entire JCS learning community, we wish to offer all our incoming and returning students and families a boisterous WELCOME! We know it is going to be another wonderful year and we can’t wait to get it all started.
To stay up to date on important happenings taking place at JCS throughout the year, we encourage students and families to review our weekly Raven Post, which is posted on our website and sent out via SchoolMessenger to subscribers near the end of each week. The Raven Post is a great place to keep up to date on what is going on at JCS and stay on top of any important information that needs to be shared. In addition to this, you can follow our Instagram, @jcs_ravens, for student opportunities, celebrations, and much more. Go Ravens!
JCS Athletics
Are you interested in school sports? Football, Volleyball, Golf, Cross Country and Girls’ Soccer are all starting their seasons right away. Please talk to one of the coaches or PE teachers for more information on trying out for a team.
Personal Mobile Devices – Update
In June 2024, the province mandated new regulations governing the use of cell phones and other personal mobile devices in schools. These new regulations will apply to all students, with exceptions for students using devices for health and medical needs, to support specialized learning needs and for educational purposes.
Currently, personal mobile devices are not allowed during class time unless teachers allow them for specific learning tasks. Otherwise, devices should be silenced or turned off and stowed away in a bag, backpack, locker, or in a designated area as directed by the teacher. If not needed, students are encouraged to leave personal mobile devices at home or in a personally secured space as schools do not assume responsibility for damage, theft or loss of any digital device brought to the school.
To support, CBE has also blocked student access to known social media platforms on school networks and school devices in all educational sites.
For more information on the Personal Mobile Devices and Social Media Use in Our Schools please visit the CBE New Portal on the JCS website.
Attendance
If students are going to be absent for any reason, please email joanecardinalschubert@cbe.ab.ca. Any student absent for more than 5 days must fill out an Extended Absence Form in the main office.
Important School Dates
We follow the CBE traditional calendar. The calendar sets common start and end days, non-instructional days and holidays. For our school’s additional non-instructional days, late entries, early dismissal days and events, see the JCS school calendar page.
Course Change Requests
Due to the volume of course change requests and the limited available movement in classes, students’ final opportunity to request changes to their timetables will be Wednesday, September 4 from 3:30-5:00 in the Hub.
Spare/Study Block
In order to support a productive use of time, all students with spare time are expected to be working in the 3rd Floor Learning Commons (LC3), Upper Hub, or off campus. Student ID with spare stickers are required to use these spaces during scheduled class time. Spare stickers will be available at the circulation desk in LC3 on September 9.
School ID and Photos
For school security purposes, all students are required to have a current school ID with them at school every day. School ID catch up photos will be offered on September 11 for any students that missed the initial dates. Photo retakes will be on October 16.
School Supplies
Please bring your own basic school supplies, such as pens, pencils, and binders with paper. Your teachers will let you know of any specific additional supplies required.
School Fees
Where can I find fees associated with courses?
Your child’s school fees can be viewed and paid through the myCBE PowerSchool Portal,
What if I Can't Afford to Pay School Fees?
If you are unable to pay school fees, please access this CBE What if I Can't Afford to Pay School Fees? document for further information.
Please contact Linda Kowalchuk by email at llkowalchuk@cbe.ab.ca or call the school at 403-817-3600 Ext 2007 if you have further questions.
Transportation and Parking
Calgary Transit
Calgary Transit has express buses to the school from designated communities. For JCS Express Route information, please visit the Calgary Transit School Express Routes website.
Calgary Transit also has a “Plan a Trip” tool or families can also call 403-262-1000 for assistance with route planning and questions about Calgary Transit operations. Families do not need to register to use Calgary Transit, including school express routes.
Student Parking Passes for 2023-24
Grade 11 & 12 students have priority for purchasing a JCS parking pass. An email was sent to all grade 12’s with the application. Students who submit a parking application will receive a confirmation email with further instructions. Any students who did not receive an email can contact Linda Kowalchuk. Grade 10 students will receive an email in mid-September inviting them to apply for a parking pass.
A parking fee appearing in the MYCBE account is confirmation that they will receive a pass. Once the online payment is complete, they will be issued a parking pass through the Business Office. Parking fees include GST, and are as follows:
- Full Year (Sept to June) $50
- Semester One (Sept to Jan) $25
- Semester Two (Feb to June) $25
Craven Café
Cravens Cafe would like to welcome back all students, we missed you! To all new students, we hope you enjoy your first few weeks of grade 10. We do our best to provide great food at low prices for everyone, please feel free to ask questions or make suggestions; our doors are open.
Craven's Cafe will be closed for the first two weeks of the semester. There will be no breakfast or lunch service until September 16, so arrange to bring lunch to school before that.
- Cravens Cafe will be offering breakfast service from 8:15 to 9:00am daily starting September 16
- Students and staff can pre-order and prepay for their lunches during breakfast service, please see a Craven's staff member for more information
- Regular lunch service will also be available at the main cafe
- Cravens will be offering three volunteer spots per service day for non-culinary students who would like to volunteer during lunch service. Training is required for all students, including students who have previously volunteered (see Chef Kari for details). Students will be provided with a complimentary lunch for their service.
- We offer Halal meats whenever possible, all chicken and ground beef products are Halal, as well as the pepperoni we use for our pizzas. We will do our best to ensure all menu items that are Halal are labelled as such. If there is any confusion, please ask a staff member. Please note, the chicken and beef in our soups is also Halal but cannot be labelled as such because the stock used is not Halal.
Lost and Found
There is a Lost and Found in the main hub area for students to relocate lost items. Any smaller or valuable items are in the main office. Please have students check their items regularly as the lost and found items are donated at Winter Break, Spring Break and end of the year.
