Dear Students and Parents/Guardians,
We must share an important update on the capacity of Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School. As previously communicated, beginning in the 2024-25 school year, students residing in the New Brighton community are designated to Lord Beaverbrook High School. Due to the continued rapid enrolment of new students at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School, the school has now reached its capacity, which means we must introduce additional solutions to address the high enrolment.
Due to this ongoing growth, the school will not be able to accommodate all the students who live within the designated school boundary. To address the space concerns, we will immediately cap enrolment at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School and introduce an overflow for new students registering at the school. Designation changes will also be made for students residing in the community of Copperfield beginning in the 2025-26 school year.
Effective immediately, new registrations from students living in the communities of Auburn Bay, Cranston, Mahogany, and Seton that cannot be accommodated at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School for the 2023-24 school year and beyond will be overflowed to:
- Centennial High School - located at 55 Sun Valley Blvd SE, Calgary, AB T2X 3W7
Students overflowed to Centennial High School will be placed on a call-back list. If space becomes available, they will be given the opportunity to transfer back to Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School.
Effective immediately, for the remainder of the 2023-24 school year and the 2024-25 school year, new registrations from students living in the community of Copperfield will be overflowed to:
- Lord Beaverbrook High School - located at 9019 Fairmount Dr SE, Calgary, AB T2H 0Z4
High School Designation Change for Copperfield Students
Students from the Copperfield community will be re-designated to Lord Beaverbrook High School beginning in the 2025-26 school year. While this change was not outlined in the High School Engagement process as it was for the community of New Brighton, it is necessary to manage enrolment growth at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School.
This designation change will benefit the cohort group of New Brighton and Copperfield by allowing students to remain together in high school. Copperfield students already attending Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School will be able to stay at the school for the 2025-26 school year and beyond until they graduate from the school or move from the community.
Copperfield students overflowed to Lord Beaverbrook High School in the 2023-24 and 2024-25 school years will be placed on a call-back list. If space becomes available, they will be given an opportunity to transfer back to Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School.
No Changes for Current Students at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School
Current students will remain at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School for the 2023-24 school year and beyond, provided they do not move out of the school boundary.
No Changes for Students Accepted to Attend Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School
Any registrations from students designated to Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School that have been processed and confirmed by the school for the 2024-25 school year will be able to attend the school until they graduate or move out of the school boundary.
Why is this change happening?
Over the previous and current school years, continuous registrations for Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School have been at a rate higher than anticipated for communities designated to the school. For this reason, these changes must be put in place to ensure the learning environment is not adversely impacted and to manage enrolment at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School.
What is a call-back list?
If space at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School becomes available during the school year, it will be offered to students on the call-back list who are attending their designated overflow school, Centennial High School or Lord Beaverbrook High School.
Students remain on the call-back list while they attend the designated overflow school. Students will be removed from the call-back list if they move out of the Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School boundary, transfer from their designated overflow school, or decline a call-back to Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School. Any new registrations received for the 2023-24 school year will be added to the call-back list based on priority designation and the date and time of their registration.
How do I register for the 2024-25 school year?
Any new registrations from students living in the Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School designated school boundary must still register for Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School through SchoolEngage. Once these registrations have been received, the school will determine if space and resources are available at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School.
If the student cannot be accommodated, student information is transferred to their new overflow designation, Centennial High School for new Auburn Bay, Cranston, Mahogany, and Seton students, or Lord Beaverbrook High School for new Copperfield students. The student will be added to the call-back list based on priority. For more information on how to register, please visit our website.
How do I register for the 2025-26 school year?
New students in Grades 10 to 12 who are not attending a CBE school and are designated to Joane Cardinal Schubert High School for the 2025-26 school year must still register for the school. For more information on how to register, please visit our website.
The lottery process may be followed for incoming Grade 10 students for the 2025-26 school year and beyond at Joane Cardinal Schubert High School. Students attending a CBE school from Auburn Bay, Cranston, Mahogany, and Seton who will be entering Grade 10 at Joane Cardinal Schubert High School for the 2025-26 school year will automatically be entered into the lottery. Incoming Grade 10 students who are unsuccessful in the lottery or cannot be accommodated will be overflowed and added to the call-back list. New Grade 11 and 12 regular program students who cannot be accommodated at the school will continue to be overflowed and added to the call-back list. For more details on the lottery process, deadlines and how we determine priority, please visit our website.
Students attending a CBE school living in the Copperfield community who will be re-designated and entering Grade 10 at Lord Beaverbrook High School for the 2025-26 school year will automatically be registered there.
We will make every effort to keep siblings together at a single school. Families with an incoming student who is either re-designated or unsuccessful in the lottery and with a sibling who is already attending Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School may choose to register all children at the same overflow or re-designated school.
What other measures are being taken to address higher enrolment at Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School?
Six new modular classrooms were requested as part of the CBE’s 2023 Modular Classroom Program request to the Alberta government. These classrooms would bring needed instructional space to the school. We anticipate a response to this request in the coming weeks. If modulars are approved and installed, some of the overflowed students will be called back and given the option to return to Joane Cardinal Schubert High School.
Is there transportation for students attending the designated overflow schools?
High school students are assigned to Calgary Transit as their mode of transportation. Routes can be accessed through the “Plan a Trip” tool. While CBE works collaboratively with Calgary Transit, Calgary Transit makes decisions on service levels based on available space and resources.
