Demographics
We all ask families to go into School Engage and update their demographic information and any forms that still need to be completed. Parents who are unable to access School Engage may contact the main office for support.
National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
Sept. 30 marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day, intended to respond to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) Call to Action No. 80 and honor the experiences and resilience of Indigenous children and communities by commemorating and raising awareness about the painful legacy of Canada's residential school system. This year marks 10 years since the TRC released its final reports and 94 Calls to Action.
Joane Cardinal-Schubert High School is honoured to welcome Karen Lundy, supported by JCS’s very own Jodi Silliker-Nordquist (Ms. N) to share their knowledge with JCS students via presentations on Friday September 26, 2025. These presentations will discuss the origins of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. Students are encouraged to wear orange shirts to celebrate even if their classes are not attending the presentations. We invite parents and students to continue this important work by attending events in Moh’kins’tsis (the original Blackfoot name for the land now known as Calgary) on September 30, 2025. A list of events can be found on the Truth and Reconciliation at the CBE page.
Off-Campus Programs
Work Experience and the Registered Apprenticeship Program (RAP) are up and running. If your child has a job or volunteers within Calgary city limits, they can earn up to 15 credits towards graduation in Work Experience. If they have a job in a certified trade with a red-seal supervisor, they can earn up to 40 credits towards graduation in RAP. Please have your student make an appointment through the Main Office to see Mr. Gelfand for more information.
SafeGen Safety Courses
If your student enrolled in SafeGen this year through Mr. Gelfand and has not received an enrollment email from them, please send Mr. Gelfand an email (regelfand@cbe.ab.ca).
Update on Modular Classrooms
The contractor is still working hard to complete the installation of the new modular classrooms, and the CBE is keeping very close tabs on this progress. We have been told that they now anticipate this work will not be completed until early November. For now, we will continue with our existing plan to accommodate classes in the school. We will provide more information as we are closer to the work being finalized. We appreciate your patience with these unexpected delays. Thanks for your continued understanding.
Well-Being Family & Caregiver Series
The Calgary Board of Education invites all parents and guardians to join a live online series on supporting child and youth well-being. The series is hosted by the Recovery Alberta Community Education Service (CES) Program in collaboration with local experts from the Calgary community.
Please find the poster with session links. Sessions are designed to provide families with knowledge, tools, and strategies to help navigate the challenges and opportunities of raising children and teens today. Along with the poster, additional session details are available on the CBE Child and Youth Family and Caregiver Series page.
Changes to Alberta’s Education Act
Through the Education Amendment Act, 2024, the Government of Alberta has made changes to the Education Act. Please find a letter outlining the changes with additional links for more information for parents.

Castlerock is our provider for ordering extra support keys for students. The keys are not mandatory but offered as assistance for students in each subject. Please use this link to order. Orders close October 2 and all items will be delivered to the school approximately three business days later for distribution from the Main Office.
Language Course Challenge
The primary purpose of the CBE Language Course Challenge program is to assist students in meeting all requirements for high school graduation. Registration priority is therefore granted to Grade 12 students who require the program to meet graduation requirements in the current school year. Other students are also welcome to apply to the program. 30-level language course challenges are offered twice per year. There are fall (October-November) and winter (March-April) sessions. A student can challenge one language course only per session.
Students who wish to challenge a 30- or 35-level language course may do so by completing the Language Course Challenge Consent Form available on page 15 of the CBE Course Challenge Guide for Students and Families. The Language Challenge Consent Form is due to the JCS main office by Wednesday October 1, 2025.
